Stair

Durham NC – Completed 2004

In the first of several projects, the owners of this spec house from the mid 80s wanted to push the interior environment in a clearly modern direction. In the center of the house, an existing wood framed staircase that was somewhat dark and cramped was removed and replaced with a new and very open steel framed stair. This sculptural object opened the middle of the house up to light and views through the space horizontally as well as vertically through three floors. Clean lines, simple geometry, exposed structural details, and a steel cable railing unify the design and bring a calm sense of order and refinement to the home.
